That was Steve Bruce’s verdict after Murphy’s superb performance in Newcastle United's 7-0 Carabao Cup win over League Two side Morecambe last night.

Murphy – who has had loans at Sheffield Wednesday and West Bromwich Albion since joining Newcastle in the summer of 2017 in a £12million deal – was on target at the Mazuma Stadium, where he lined up on the right.

The winger is again a loan target for Wednesday, but head coach Bruce said: “I won’t be letting him out on loan, not after a performance like that. He deserves to stay with us.

"He’s improved enormously. I’ve been very, very pleased, even thought he hasn’t made the squad for the weekend. We’ve got 20-odd players to choose from. But, at this particular moment, I won’t be letting Jacob go out.”

Murphy’s performance in the third-round tie followed an impressive pre-season campaign.

“He’s had a really good pre-season,” said Bruce. “He showed a great attitude towards it. I think you’ve also witnessed he’s benefitted obviously from being out on loan. He had a really good loan at Sheffield Wednesday, where they speak highly of him.

"He’s a good young player who’s direct and quick and he’s grasped his chance. Arguably, he’s our best player tonight. Fair play to him.”

Newcastle will face League Two club Newport County away in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Bruce said: “It was nice to get the job done. Some of the football was terrific.”
