Steve Bruce issues injury update at Newcastle United

Steve Bruce admits his team was “badly affected” by injuries following last season’s Premier League restart.

However, only one player is not in training ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Bruce was without a clutch of players in the latter weeks of the season due to injuries, and Newcastle United's head coach was forced to play several players out of position. The only player who hasn’t trained at the club’s pre-season base in York is defender Fabian Schar, who had surgery after dislocating his shoulder last month.

"Everybody, touch wood, is now training, so it’s good news for (Florian) Lejeune,” said Bruce. “It’s good news for (Paul) Dummett, good news for (Jamaal) Lascelles. The only one not training is Schar. Ciaran Clark’s training as well. At the moment, we’re OK, because we were badly affected.”

Newcastle play League One club Crewe Alexandra at Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate tomorrow (2pm).
