The defender, signed from Norwich City last summer, was not involved in yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester City at St James’s Park.

Speaking after the game, Steve Bruce said: “Unfortunately, he picked up a knee injury yesterday in training. We don’t think it’s anything too bad, but it swelled up overnight, so he wasn’t available.”

Matt Ritchie was fielded as a left wing-back by Bruce, who felt that Newcastle were “punished” for giving the ball away.

"We gave the ball away cheaply on both occasions – and Leicester punished us,” said United’s head coach. “The one thing you don't want to do when you are having arguably your best spell after half-time is give the ball away. It's something we have to improve on. I didn't think we deserved to lose the game, but we have been punished and caught on the counter-attack.”
