“I love Newcastle and everything it stands for on and off the pitch,” said Saint-Maximin. “It feels like home to me now. I feel like I’m a part of this city.

"More than that, I now have the big dream of following in the footsteps of David Ginola – I want to leave my mark here like he did! Knowing the Newcastle project, I now know that it is possible!

"Thank you Newcastle to believe in me, thanks to the supporters for this amazing connection between us! I will do everything I can do to achieve great things with this club! You guys deserve it, and the best is coming!”

Saint-Maximin also referenced “long discussions about football and life” with Steve Nickson, United’s head of recruitment. Nickson – who was criticised for the club’s £40million acquisition of Joelinton last season – brought Saint-Maximin to the club.

"I'm sure the supporters will be delighted with the news. He's had an introduction now to what life in the Premier League is like and with Allan. The world’s at his feet. He can go as far as he wants to go, because he's got the talent to do it."
