A summer of transfer activity and largely fully-fit squad means the Magpies head coach has one or two big decisions to make when naming his starting line-up for the clash with Nottingham Forest.
Steve Cooper’s newly-promoted side will be a tough test for Newcastle who are looking to carry on the momentum they forged in a fantastic end to their last campaign.
The Magpies have lost just once in the league at home this calendar year and will want to get off to a winning start in-front of their own fans on Saturday afternoon.
St James’s Park will be rocking once again - but will supporters get to catch a glimpse of their new signings? Or will Howe stick with his tried and tested system?
Here, we take a look at the Newcastle United starting XI that could face Nottingham Forest on Saturday:

5. LB: Matt Targett
Targett’s addition in January went under the radar, much like his permanent signing this summer. However, it’s no secret that the Magpies are better with him in the side and he knows exactly what Howe expects of him down that left side. Photo: Gualter Fatia

6. CM: Joe Willock
Jonjo Shelvey’s injury means this spot is up for grabs on Saturday and it could be Willock who is given the opportunity to impress. Willock looked very dangerous against Athletic Club in this role. Photo: Stu Forster

7. CM: Bruno Guimaraes
The Brazilian was superb in the opening stages against Athletic Club and although his influence waned as proceedings drew to a close, he reminded everyone of his class and why he is probably the first name on Howe’s team sheet. Photo: Gualter Fatia

8. CM: Joelinton
Newcastle United’s Player of the Season last year will want to impress yet again against Forest on Saturday. His consistent performances means he has become one of United’s key players. Photo: Stu Forster
