A powerful investment group, including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, withdrew its bid last week over the “prolonged” Premier League approval process. The Premier League has made no comment, and the Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) has demanded “transparency”.

"Answers are now needed,” said NUST. “United, we stand a far greater chance of getting a resolution we desire. This is your opportunity to write to your elected representative and demand action from the Premier League.”

NUST chair Alex Hurst yesterday revealed that more than 5,300 fans had used a letter template to write to contact their MP over the takeover. MPs, in turn, have been writing to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters demanding answers.

Meanwhile, almost 90,000 fans have signed an online petition calling for an “independent investigation” into the process.
