Burnley manager Sean Dyche said he was “surprised” Carroll had stayed on the field after his team’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United at Turf Moor yesterday.
Stand-in captain Carroll caught Ben Mee with his elbow during the Premier League game, which was punctuated by fouls and decided by a goal from a disputed corner.
Asked about the incident, Carroll told BBC Radio Newcastle: “It was just a challenge. I was jumping up, getting elbows, giving elbows. It was exactly the same at both ends. But, somehow, every game it’s me – it’s always me.”

Steve Bruce, United’s head coach, was critical referee Tim Robinson after the game. Carroll said: “A few bad decisions lead to the goal. It wasn’t a corner – the ref’s given a corner when he’s already given a goal kick.”
