The Magpies legend and record goalscorer was drafted in for the final eight games of the 2008/09 season in a bid to try and save the club from relegation.
Ultimately, Shearer cruelly fell short in his challenge, which started with a 2-0 defeat at home to Chelsea on April 4, 2009.
Indeed, the situation Newcastle currently find themselves in isn’t too dissimilar to when Shearer arrived – apart from under-fire Steve Bruce is likely to stay until the end of the campaign.
Here, we take a look at Shearer’s first starting XI as United boss – and find out what they’re up to now.

5. Jose Enrique
Enrique was forced into early retirement due to a persistent knee injury in 2017 before he was diagnosed with a brain tumour a year later. Thankfully, the Spaniard made a full recovery and is enjoying life back home in Valencia, occasionally appearing as a pundit on Sky Sports. Photo: Hamish Blair

6. Jonas Gutierrez
The love between Gutierrez and the Geordies runs deep after he battled testicular cancer during his time at St James’s Park. His goal to keep Newcastle in the Premier League was something of a fairytale and he continues to prove he's a bionic man, playing for Argentina side Banfield aged 37. Photo: Stu Forster

7. Kevin Nolan
Tyne Wear derby hero Nolan stepped into management with Leyton Orient and Notts County - guiding the latter into the League Two play-offs. However, his dismissal in 2018 was his last management job. He’s now on David Moyes’ backroom staff at West Ham. Photo: ANDREW YATES

8. Nicky Butt
Butt recently departed his role as head of first-team development at Manchester United in order to pursue a “new professional challenge”. Since then, he’s been linked with an assistant manager role at Celtic and the England U21s job. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
