Bruce’s side progressed from the fourth round last night thanks to a 3-2 extra-time win over Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

Allan Saint-Maximin scored a 116th-minute winner in front of owner Mike Ashley and 1,800 travelling fans.

“It’s significant for the club,” said head coach Bruce, who had been under pressure following successive goalless draws at St James’s Park. “A club like ours needs to be getting into the fifth round.

“I know what it does for the city and the supporters, who have come a million miles to get here. A couple of thousand were here, which is remarkable. We’re in the next round. We made hard work of it, against Rochdale and against Oxford, but I think we thoroughly deserved to win.”
