The transfer deadline day mega deal Newcastle United missed out on

According to the BBC, the Magpies had agreed a loan deal for the Schalke defender, only for Jurgen Klopp to step in and snatch the Turkish international from under United’s nose.

Kabak has today signed for the Reds on loan, costing around £1million up front with an £18million option to buy in the summer.

The move comes after Klopp was quoted £35million for the 20-year-old back in the summer window of 2020.

Steve Bruce had been keen to add one defender and two midfielders today but looks set to land only Arsenal youngster Joe Willock on loan.

DeAndre Yedlin has left on a free transfer, joining Galatasaray, while Matt Ritchie’s move to Bournemouth fell through due to the Magpies’ valuation of the player.

Rumours of a Fabian Schar exit, potentially stoked by the Kabak links, proved unfounded on deadline day as hope of doing a deal for Hamza Choudhury, of Leicester City, faded due to the Foxes’ inability to secure a replacement.

United look set to have one free place in their 25-man Premier League squad due to the exit of Yedlin, with Willock classed as an underage player.

That means Bruce will have the embarrassing task of selecting one player from outside the current squad to step into his first-team pool.

Christian Atsu would seem the most likely pick but others such as Henri Saivet, Achraf Lazaar, Kyle Scott and Florent Indalecio could also be considered.
