The World Cup starts in less than a fortnight’s time when hosts Qatar play Ecuador on Sunday, November 20. The Three Lions’ campaign gets underway less than a day later when they face Iran on Monday, November 21 (1pm kick-off).

Newcastle already have three players confirmed to be playing at the World Cup with Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar and Garang Kuol called-up to represent Brazil, Switzerland and Australia respectively. But how many, if any, will be representing England in Qatar?

And when will we find out who Southgate has chosen to represent the Three Lions? Here, we take a look at everything you need to know ahead of the England squad selection:

When is the announcement?

Gareth Southgate will name his squad for the World Cup at 2pm today (Thursday, November 10). Southgate has previously named a 55-man long list which he will have to whittle down to just 26 names this afternoon.

Which Newcastle United players could be selected?

Kieran Trippier is seemingly guaranteed his place in the squad having become one of Southgate’s trusted squad members. Trippier’s only goal for his country famously came at the last World Cup in Russia when his free-kick put the Three Lions in the lead against Croatia in the semi-final.

Crystal Palace penalty hero Nick Pope is also likely to be named in Southgate’s squad and will likely act as deputy to Jordan Pickford in goal. Pope has ten England caps to his name with the latest coming in September’s Nations League matches.

Callum Wilson also has a shout at being named in the squad following his stellar season in-front of goal. Wilson was named in the long list and will be hoping to receive his first international call-up since 2019.

Dan Burn’s form has also led to talk he may be in-line for a maiden call-up to the national side, however, the former Brighton man is seen as an outside shot to be selected by Southgate.

When do England play?

As mentioned, England’s first group game is on Monday, November 21 against Iran. They will then face USA on Friday, November 25 (7pm kick-off) before rounding off their group stage against Wales on Tuesday, November 29 (7pm kick-off).
