‘You couldn't contain him!’ - Shaka Hislop recalls that Temur Ketsbaia moment

Georgian forward Temur Ketsbaia produced one of the most iconic moments in Premier League history.

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has opened up on one of the most bizarre moments in the club's history.

Temur Ketsbaia may have scored only 8 Premier League goals for the club, and 14 in total across all competitions, but one in particular remains the most memorable for one specific reason.

Ketsbaia scored a 90th-minute winner at St James' Park on January 17, 1998, as the Magpies beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1.

But fans remember not the Georgian legend's close-range finish, but the absolutely wild celebration that followed.

He took off his shirt, then tried to take off one of his boots, before booting the advertising hoarding three times in some of the most insane scenes in Premier League history.

Over the years, the moment has become almost iconic in Newcastle folklore. He might not have been here long (1997 to 2000), but Ketsbaia left his mark - mostly on the advertising hoardings.

Hislop was Newcastle's starting keeper on that day 28 years ago, and remembers the whole incident and the aftermath in the changing rooms vividly.

Explaining the feeling among the players post-match, Hislop, speaking to the Shields Gazette thanks to Lad Casino, said: "Disbelief, I'll be honest with you!

"Temur was always that kind of fiery character, and I think he quite clearly had issues with (Kenny) Dalglish, who was our coach at this point, because of a lack of playing time and, while you knew there was a lot of pent-up tension with Temur, I don't think anybody expected that!

"I don't know if you remember, but after volleying the advertising boards, they go and take the kick-off, and the ball comes to Temur, and he's facing straight across the pitch, like sideways, and just boots the ball at 90 degrees into the stand.

"From a player's perspective, from anybody's perspective, it was just incredible! You couldn't contain him, and we laughed about that for a long time!"

Hislop added that Newcastle players made sure to stay away from Ketsbaia in the dressing room after the match.

Hislop added: "We were there and we knew that Temur had lost it, but the game is still going on and we still have to try to win this game. Nobody has any idea what's gonna happen next with Temur, so just trying to manage through that was incredible.

"My mental picture of the dressing room after isn’t quite one of him coming in and saying, ‘sorry, lads’.

"He just stayed away; everybody just stayed away! Just left Temur because nobody knew what was gonna happen!"
