South Shields FC youngster challenged after promising cameo against Spalding
Academy product Dan Savage has made two substitute appearances for South Shields FC this season.
Mike Williamson has praised the work levels and commitment of South Shields FC academy product Dan Savage as he looks to force his way into the Mariners side.
The versatile forward has made just two substitute appearances so far this season and he produced some bright moments after coming off the bench for the final 25 minutes of a 1-1 draw with National League North rivals Spalding United on Bank Holiday Monday.

As it stands, the vast majority of Savage’s senior experience has come during loan spells with Blyth Spartans and Hebburn Town in recent seasons - although he has made over 30 appearances for the Mariners after making his first-team bow as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Warrington Town in January 2024. However, the 20-year-old remains determined to impress Williamson throughout his first season in charge at Mariners Park and will hope he gets a chance to build on his eye-catching cameo against the Tulips earlier this week.
Williamson described Savage as ‘honest as the day is long’ when asked what he made of the youngster’s attitude - but warned the academy product he faces a similar challenge to the rest of his team-mates as they look to improve throughout the season.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s visit to Hednesford Town, Williamson told The Gazette: “He is as honest as the day is long and we know it’s been difficult for him - but he just keeps working hard every single day and he will give everything for us whenever he is called upon.
“The challenge for Dan is the same as it is for everyone within our squad - it’s to get striving to improve and to keep working hard. Every single player in the squad has areas to improve on and Dan is no different. They all just have to keep working hard to improve those areas and you have to be ready to take that chance if it comes your way.”
Williamson will be boosted by the return of club captain Robbie Tinkler for Saturday’s trip to Hednesford after he served a one-match ban in Monday’s home draw with Spalding.
