When it comes to women’s football, Sunderland AFC Ladies are renowned for producing some of England’s top players.

Now in the FA Women’s Championship, the ambitious team is made up of experienced players and new talent coming up through the Foundation of Light’s Regional Talent Centres looking to follow in the footsteps of those before them.

Sunderland AFC Ladies general manager Alex Clark said: “The female players are great positive role models for young people. The games are family-friendly and great to bring younger fans to the ground, attracting crowds of between 300-800 supporters.

“With only five home games to go until the end of the season, starting with our game against Crystal Palace Women on Sunday 27 February, we are hoping as many people as possible come out and support the lasses.”

Players to look out for include team captain Keira Ramshaw, who has made over 200 appearances for Sunderland, while 18-year-old Neve Herron has already been called up to also play for England’s national development squad.

As well as playing for Sunderland, Maria Farrugia is also a Maltese international player and she has impressed for the Black Cats throughout the campaign.

University students as well as teachers and teaching assistants, and an employee of The Prince’s Trust who works on overseas projects are also included within the squad.
