Sunderland contract update as big decisions lie in wait this summer

Several Sunderland players are approaching key moments in their current contracts.

Sunderland are awaiting news over the fitness of key defender Dan Ballard ahead of Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby clash with arch rivals Newcastle United.

The former Arsenal centre-back has become an integral figure within the Black Cats side over the last 12 months and has already proven he is more than capable of mixing it with Premier League strikers after producing a number of eye-catching performances throughout the current campaign. Ballard’s performances over the last year earned him the North East Football Writers Player of the Year award and he was honoured at a ceremony at Ramside Hall earlier this month.

The build-up to the presentation was dominated by the positive news Ballard had put pen-to-paper on a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light and that ended any speculation over a possible move away from Wearside. Speaking after the deal to tie down Ballard’s future was announced, Black Cats director of football Florent Ghisolfi told the club website: “Dan represents both the legacy and the future of Sunderland AFC. He embodies our identity through his professionalism, consistency, and spirit. He has grown into a Premier League defender, but just as importantly, he has become a leader within our dressing room. We are proud that he believes in our purpose and our ambition. His commitment to Sunderland is a powerful message about who we are and what we intend to build.”

Despite the understandable delight over the Northern Ireland international committing to the club, there is still work to do for Ghisolfi as several other members of the Black Cats ranks approach key points in their current contracts at the Stadium of Light. As it stands, nine players are set to be out of contract this summer - although there are some that have options to extend their current agreements. There are another seven players that will enter the final 12 months of their contracts this summer and that puts Sunderland at risk of losing their services on cut-price deals. So how does the Black Cats contract situation look ahead of what is sure to be another hectic summer?

When do the contracts of current Sunderland players come to an end?
