Sunderland confirm and explain their choice to succeed Graeme Murty as club's U21s boss

Sunderland are making a number of changes behind the scenes at the Academy of Light

Sunderland have announced that they are promoting Matt Craddock to lead the club's U21 team next season.

Craddock has been confirmed as the club's new Head of Professional Development Phase following the departure of long-serving coach Graeme Murty earlier this summer. Craddock joined the club last summer having previously worked as assistant manager at Bolton Wanderers under Ian Evatt, and having held a number of roles in youth development with the FA and Preston North End amongst others.

Craddock has made a major impression behind the scenes over the last 12 months and Head of Coaching Stuart English said the promotion was recognition of that work.

"Matt has made an excellent impact since joining the Academy of Light," English said.

"Over the past season, he's built strong relationships with our players and staff, and his work within the Professional Development Phase has been instrumental in creating an environment where young players are challenged, supported and prepared for the demands of senior football.

"His ability to develop individuals while maintaining high standards across the programme has been clear to see. He has embraced the Academy's philosophy from day one and has played an important role in strengthening the connection between our U21s, U18s and the first-team environment.

"This promotion is recognition of the work Matt has already done and the qualities he brings as a coach and leader. We have every confidence that he'll continue to drive standards, support the development of our young players and play a key role in delivering the Academy's long-term vision."

Craddock himself said: "I'm really proud to take on the role of Head PDP Coach. Since joining Sunderland, I've been incredibly impressed by the people, the culture and the clear vision throughout the Academy. I'm looking forward to continuing our work with the players and staff, helping to create an environment where young players can maximise their potential and continue their journey towards first-team football."

The news is the latest development in a busy summer of change at the Academy of Light, with Robin Nicholls having departed his role as Academy Manager to take up a new opportunity in New York. The club also opted to replace Nicholls with an internal appointment, promoting John Hewitson. Director of football Florent Ghisolfi believes the strategy helps preserve the academy and the club's strong culture.
