Smith has been out of contract since leaving MLS side Colorado Rapids towards the end of last year.

The 29-year-old was brought in after Bailey Wright suffered a serious ankle injury that could keep him out for the rest of the current season.

Smith can play anywhere across the back three and will provide extra cover in the defensive positions.

He has extensive experience in the English game, having made over 200 appearances in the Championship over ten years at Ipswich Town.

The deal is subject to international clearance and so Smith is not expected to feature when Bristol Rovers visit the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.

“I know a lot about the club – the history and the fan base,” Smith said.

“I am delighted to be a part of it and hopefully I can help push the team up towards the Championship.

“I’ve heard about the Stadium of Light and the atmosphere that is generated and I am just really excited to step out there for the first time and hopefully success can follow.

“I see myself as a leader on and off the pitch so hopefully I can use that to be a good addition to the squad.”

Manager Phil Parkinson added: “I am delighted with the signing of Tommy Smith.

“He is a good addition to the squad and will add competition to the back three.”
