Hide AdSmith can play anywhere across the back three and will provide extra cover in the defensive positions.
He has extensive experience in the English game, having made over 200 appearances in the Championship over ten years at Ipswich Town.
The deal is subject to international clearance and so Smith is not expected to feature when Bristol Rovers visit the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.
“I know a lot about the club – the history and the fan base,” Smith said.
