Florent Ghisolfi reacts as Sunderland youngster completes League One loan move
The Sunderland youngster has joined Huddersfield Town for the 2026/27 campaign
Matty Young has completed his loan move to Huddersfield Town.
The move will see the young goalkeeper step up a level to play League One football for the first time in his career, having amassed well over 50 senior appearances during two seasons on loan at Salford City. Young almost won promotion with Salford City last season, but after missing out on the final day of the regular campaign they were then beaten in the play-offs by Notts County.
Shortly before that play-off final, Young signed a new long-term deal on Wearside which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2030. A youth international, Young is widely seen as one of the brightest prospects in the club’s academy and director of football Florent Ghisolfi said the step up was a crucial moment for the 19-year-old.
“Matty has got a really bright future ahead of him and this loan is another crucial step in his ongoing development as a top young goalkeeper,” Ghisolfi said.
“The whole goalkeeping department deserves credit for his continued growth. We’re excited about watching his career continue to make forward strides at Huddersfield next season. We wish him and the club well for the 2026/27 campaign.”

Huddersfield Town bosses react to Matty Young signing
Huddersfield Town director of football Chris Markham said the club were ‘thankful’ to Sunderland for trusting them with the next stage of Young’s career.
“Matty is one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers in the country, and we’re delighted to bring him to the Club ahead of the upcoming campaign and get him acquainted with his new teammates and surroundings early in pre-season,” he said.
“His experience at both club and international level is exceptional for his age, and those who’ve worked closely with Matty cannot speak highly enough of his attitude, application and desire to improve, which are all characteristics we’re keen to see in every Town player across the Club.
“Strong in every key area for a goalkeeper and blessed with natural size and presence, we’re thankful to Sunderland for trusting us with the next stage of Matty’s development and hope to see him join a long line of young Premier League talent who’ve cut their teeth with us in West Yorkshire.”
Huddersfield Town boss Martin Drury said: “After watching a lot of Matty, it was clear as to why he’s regarded so highly.
“While he already demonstrates many of the qualities we were looking for on the pitch, his good character and hunger to improve were evident when meeting with him. He showed a desire to come and play here and we’re excited to work with him and Sunderland to further his development, while strengthening us in that position.
“Matty will work closely with Head of Goalkeeping Chris Elliott at Canalside to ensure he makes a positive contribution next season.”
