The former Rangers and Norwich City forward is a target for Phil Parkinson this month, and is available on a free transfer after leaving Norwegian side Sarpsborg.

But while he is understood to have held talks with the Black Cats, a decision on his future is not expected imminently.

According to the Daily Record, Lafferty has a number of offers from clubs overseas and is also attracting interest from Scottish Premier League side Hearts.

And they claim that the 32-year-old is keen to take his time before committing to a club.

Speaking about his interest in Lafferty on Thursday, Parkinson said: “Kyle is one of a number of players we’ve been speaking about as a staff.

“He’s a free agent and he’s on our list.”
