This year one of the region’s most famous events returns to its usual route from Newcastle to the seafront at South Shields.
With the old route back in place, the amount of options of where to watch the race in person has increased and there are plenty of options across Newcastle, Gateshead and South Tyneside to take a spot for the day to cheer on family and friends as well as the world’s best athletes.

These are some of the top places to watch the 2023 Great North Run along its famous route.

5. Gateshead Stadium
With plenty of parking and wide pavements, the stretch of the route on Gateshead's Park Road is perfect for those wanting a less cramped viewing of the race. A drumming group are expected at this part of the route too for a bit of a party atmosphere. Photo: Google

6. The Lakeside Inn pub
Of the pubs which line the Great North Run route, the Lakeside Inn have always embraced their position near the halfway point of the race. In the past they have welcomed all spectators and have even offered finishers a free Sunday Roast later in the day. Photo: Google

7. Leam Lane roundabout
This is the point at which runners turn further east from Leam Lane onto John Reid Road where the coast is almost on the horizon. This spot has everything from bridges just before the turning to a large supermarket just off the route to park. It is also a short walk from Bede Metro Station for those using public transport throughout the day. Photo: Google

8. The Marsden Inn
With the sea in sight at this point, runners will feel so close to the end so it is a great spot to give them a final push. The pub and hotel itself has held family fun days in previous years to keep kids entertained and it isn't too far from the finish line. Photo: Google
