Nico, who runs the Premier shop on Jarrow’s Scotch Estate, is putting his hand in his pocket again for those who have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

The shopkeeper, who has run the business with his brother Taz Ali for 30 years, has teamed up with Wilson Brown barbers in Edinburgh Road to offer free hair cuts to male pensioners.

Many of those set to benefit are residents of the Scotch Estate, who have gotten to know Nico throughout the crisis.

Over the last three months he has delivered more than 3,500 free loaves of bread, milk and essential items to elderly people who were unable leave their homes.

Ashleigh Hall, who owns the hairdressers and barber shop said: “Nico approached me about getting involved and I thought it would be kind gesture to help the most vulnerable people in our community and those who have been impacted by Covid-19.

“We have arranged a couple of Sundays where we will open especially for those customers Nico is supporting.”

Staff will be wearing full PPE in line with government guidance and appointments will be spaced out so no more than four people are in the store at any one time.

Customers are also asked to come wearing their own face mask and with their hair freshly washed.

Ashleigh added: “I’m excited to see people again, especially my regulars and get back to some form of normality.”

Nico and Taz appeared on Channel 4’s Unsung Heroes earlier this month in recognition of their efforts for the community.

They have delivered dozens of food packages to hospitals in the region, as well as supporting local food banks and surprising his neighbours with birthday cakes and pizza deliveries.

The community champion is said to be preparing one final surprise for residents in July.
