As lockdown restrictions were eased over the summer, The Trimmers Arms in Commercial Road reopened its doors and brought back its live events, including comedy nights, music gigs and quizzes, with the necessary social distancing measures in place.

However, with restrictions ramping up in the local lockdown, the management have announced that it’s not feasible for them to be able to continue.

A statement on the pub’s Facebook page reads: “It is with sadness that we confirm that after some extensive deliberation, we will not be renewing the lease at Trimmers Arms.

"Operating a live music venue is an extremely difficult task when capacity is reduced to approximately 25% of pre-lockdown numbers, but despite the lower attendances, costs are still high as we adhere to the new regulations imposed.

"Our aim when re-opening in August was to keep the venue open, and the goal was to get us through to the other side. Thanks to the understanding of the acts who performed and the hard work of the staff we did this on a weekly basis. However with the new restrictions on opening hours and the likelihood of this being for an extended period of time we simply do not see this being sustainable.

"We would like to thank everyone who joined us over the last two years. Those who offered support and even those who were critical of the changes we made, that unfortunately no-body will see the outcome. You helped us push on to this point and we will miss you all.

"We would also like to thank the landlord for their understanding of the situation, and by leaving the door ajar for us to possibly return next spring when the weather improves and we can utilise the larger capacity outside area for performances, which proved so successful in the summer.

"We will therefore now close until the weekend of 9th, 10th and 11th October where we will have three of the most popular bands in South Shields performing over our final weekend.”

Hundreds of people have commented on the post, expressing their sadness at the bar’s announcement.

Paul Hunter wrote: “Gutted. Great venue, always a good pint of Landlord, had some cracking nights watching bands. Boxing Day tradition gone.”

Jen Normandale said: “So unfair for you, who’ve worked so hard to keep the venue open and give South Shields live music. Completely understandable in these times. Trimmers will always have our support.”

Emma Choudhury wrote: “Absolutely gutted to hear this. One of my favourite bars with some amazing memories made over the years. Will certainly be there for your last weekend.”

Lloyd Croft said: “Sorry for the loss of the venue. For each one that goes the north east suffers that bit more.”

Jodie Thompson said: “Gutted to hear this, you guys have worked so hard in a no-win situation.”
