Study finds North East is the top area of UK for group fitness classes

A study has found the North East is the area of the country where group fitness classes are most popular.

With many using January as a great opportunity to return to fitness routines, new nationwide data from The Gym Group has revealed 2025 workout trends across the country from over 250 gyms, with over 900,000 members, making more than 65 million gym visits.

According to the data, Tuesday is the most popular day to work out for gym members across the nation, with 17% of all sessions being completed on this day and Scotland making the most Tuesday visits ahead of England and Wales.

Sunday is the least favoured with only 10%.

Functional fitness dominates class attendance nationwide, with HYROX sessions ranking among the favourites for gym goers across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Meanwhile, it is the North East which prefers to work out in groups. The region apparently embraces community with the biggest appetite for Group Classes with Circuits, their top class of choice.

It was also found that Northeastern Gen-Zers stand out by prioritising mental wellbeing and strength gains. With over 56% listing improving mental health as an exercise motivator, and 52% aiming for building muscle or toning up - around 6 points above the national average.
