The shelter, which was established in 1896, helps animals that are unwanted, neglected, abused and abandoned - as well as reuniting lost animals with their owners and finding loving new homes for those who are no longer wanted.
Here are 19 cute animals who are in need of a home - you can find out more at: https://www.dogandcatshelter.com/.

9. Bull Mastiff (Bull Mastiff Cross)
Xander is only six-months-old and at times, finds the world a bit scary and overwhelming. His new family will need to have patience and provide support for him to help him gain confidence and learn that the world isn’t such a scary place after all! Once Xander gets to know you, he is a bouncy and playful pup with lots of character. He is an extremely intelligent and sensitive lad, with a variety of working breeds in him. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

10. Zara (Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross)
Zara arrived into care in a bit of a sorry state! She had been attacked by another dog and had a few nasty wounds from this, but was an angel for treatment from the moment she arrived. Unbeknown to staff, Zara was in the early stages of pregnancy when she was brought into our care, and went on to be a wonderful mother to the litter dubbed “The Caraboao Pups”. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

11. Narla (Border Collie Cross)
Narla is an intelligent and energetic girl who absolutely loves to go for runs in our big field! She has energy for days and would need an owner capable of keeping up with her! Narla loves people and is a really friendly girl, but can be a little shy when first meeting some new people. However, once she has gotten to know you, she will be your best friend! | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

12. Ebbie
Ebbie is a lovely girl who arrived at the shelter as a heavily pregnant stray. She was a very good mum to her kittens – and showed staff her protective side! Since her kittens are now old enough for rehoming and have been separated from Ebbie, she has calmed down significantly and is generally a much more relaxed girl now. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter
