‘An opportunity’ - Whitburn residents urged to give their views on proposals for a parish council

Whitburn residents are being urged to take the “opportunity” to give their views on proposals for a parish council.

Residents, businesses and community organisations in the Whitburn Neighbourhood Forum area are being invited to give their views on proposals to establish a parish council for the village.

When a valid request in received, South Tyneside Council has a legal duty to carry out a Community Governance Review to seek the views of residents and stakeholders before making a decision.

The first stage of the consultation is open from now until Monday, September 28, and feedback will help shape the Council’s draft recommendations before a second consultation is held later this year - a final decision is expected in 2027.

Lucy Keating, Interim Director of Legal and Governance (Monitoring Officer) at South Tyneside Council, said: "This consultation is an opportunity for residents, businesses and local organisations in Whitburn to have their say on how their community could be represented in the future.

“The Council is required to consider all views submitted as part of the Community Governance Review process, which comes following a request from Whitburn Neighbourhood Forum.

"The feedback we receive during this first stage of consultation will help inform our draft recommendations, which will be subject to further public consultation later in the year before any final decision is made."

People are being asked whether they agree or disagree with the creation of a new parish council for the Whitburn Neighbourhood Area and to provide reasons for their views.
