Bands head for South Shields for Love Music Hate Racism event

Bands and singers are joining forces at a South Tyneside arts venue to drown out racism in society with music.

Love Music Hate Racism will be staged at The Customs House, on Saturday with 14 groups taking to the stage.

The night, organised by Peter T Murray from South Shields, will include genres punk, metal, rock, hip-hop, poetry and African drumming from Djembe Collective.

He said: “Racism is still alive today and we must rid society of this evil.

“Music is universal and has always brought people together, so this event is to bring people from all backgrounds together to entertain us and spread an anti-racism message.”

Doors open at noon. The first band, Kickback Generation, from County Durham, will take to the stage at 1pm.

Singer and guitarist Mick Robson said: “We’re bringing a set of chant-along, anthemic punk songs to The Customs House in the name of eradicating racism.

“We love playing any show, but shows like these, where there’s a real cause behind them, really bring the punk scene together on an entirely different level and we’re proud to be involved in the event.

“Hopefully everyone will be ready to sing along as we kick the day off!”

They will be followed by The Band for Disease Control and Prevention, Razorblade Smile, The Filth, Anord, LoGOz, rappers Rex Regis and Soundcloud rapper 90BRO, among others.

Antony Bircham, from The Band for Disease Control and Prevention, said: “We are a bit different in that we use samples from film and TV live, and we got the actor Phil Davis to record something especially just for us.”

The national Love Music Hate Racism campaign aims to unite people of all cultures through music.

It has a host of high-profile supporters, including Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Clean Bandit, Charlie XCX, Anne-Marie, Royal Blood, Jess Glynne and Stormzy.
