Steven Puttock originally received an 18-week jail term, which was suspended for a year, in May after he was convicted of assaulting his victim in South Shields on May 3.

But he breached both the terms of this sentence and a restraining order imposed on March 30 by contacting her and entering an address in the town on August 22.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, which dealt with the case originally, has now triggered part of the suspended jail term and imprisoned him for 12 weeks.

He has until December 31 to pay the outstanding sum.
