Thousands of pounds of cannabis seized after package sent from United States

Police stopped thousands of pounds worth of cannabis hitting the streets after it was intercepted after a package sent from the US.

More than £5,000 worth of cannabis was intercepted at a depot, Northumbria Police have revealed.

The package, which had been sent from the United States and was destined for an address in Killingworth, was filled with £5,200 worth of cannabis.

It was seized as part of Operation Avert - an initiative which sees officers from the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU) team up with UK Border Force Agency to make sure drugs, offensive weapons and other harmful substances are prevented from entering the country.

A spokesperson NERSOU’s disruption team said: “We know members of the public have differing views on the legality of cannabis but our work here is to make sure packages containing illegal and harmful substances are intercepted and prevented from hitting our streets.”
