Newcastle United fans make feelings clear with what Matthias Jaissle did during 3-1 defeat at Everton
Everton 3-1 Newcastle United: James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored to see the Toffees advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
Newcastle United suffered an early Carabao Cup exit by their standards as Everton cruised to a 3-1 win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night.
After an even opening half-hour which saw Newcastle denied a penalty, James Garner put the home side in front with a tidy finish into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box. Hayden Hackney then scored on the stroke of half-time before Thierno Barry put the result beyond doubt in the second half.
Dan Burn scored a late consolation with his head in the final moments of the match to salvage some pride.

Everton will now travel to Fleetwood Town in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup as Newcastle exit the competition before the last eight for the first time since 2021.
Matthias Jaissle made one change from the side that beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Sunday with Jacob Ramsey coming in to replace Joelinton in the starting line-up. But the midfielder would only last until half-time before being replaced by the Brazilian at the break.
William Osula was also withdrawn at half-time after taking a knock to be replaced by Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga came on for Harvey Barnes.
But it was the reaction from the near 8,000 travelling Newcastle fans to a late substitution made by Jaissle that spoke volumes. With 10 minutes of normal time remaining, Sean Steur came on for a brief cameo appearance in place of Nico Gonzalez.
The Dutch midfielder has not started since his impressive display in the 2-1 over Hull City and was a late substitute against Palace last time out. With supporters growing frustrated at the 18-year-old’s lack of action, there were clear sarcastic cheers from the away end when Steur was introduced to the pitch with Everton leading 3-0.
Jaissle has explained that Steur’s lack of minutes recently has been down to Nico Gonzalez’s return to the side and the important role he plays. But with the side struggling to function around the Spaniard, calls for Steur to get more minutes have only grown louder, but Jaissle has so far stood firm and limited his minutes.
Droves of the away support had already made their way for the exit by the time Burn had pulled back a consolation for Newcastle. And by the time the players eventually made their way over to applaud the travelling fans that remained, muted boos could be heard.
It’s now three or more goals conceded in three of Newcastle’s last four away matches against Leeds United, Coventry City and Everton. It does not make for good reading with the lack of quality in either box from Jaissle’s side a particular cause for concern.
