Two arrests over fight at South Shields Metro station after report of 'racial abuse' of family in Marine Park

A family was reported to be racially abused in a South Shields park, prompting a ‘violent’ altercation’ between two men.

Northumbria Police detectives are investigating the incident, which happened at 5pm on Saturday, June 20.

Officers received a report that a family had been racially abused in Marine Park.

The victim and his family have then followed the suspect and his associates into South Shields Metro Station.

A large crowd gathered as two men – a white man armed with a golf club and an Asian male armed with a yellow cone – assaulted each other in the lift.

Police arrested two men – aged 43 and 18 – on suspicion of violent disorder. Both have since been released under investigation.

Detectives are now appealing for anyone who witnessed the fight to come forward.
