Two rope rescue teams from South Shields were called to Whitburn at about 5.45pm tonight.
A four-year-old Lurcher had fallen down a sinkhole near to Souter Lighthouse.
A firefighter was lowered into the area to retrieve the dog.
The owner was advised to take their pet, which appeared to be uninjured, to the vets for a precautionary check-up.
