Hebburn flats damaged as huge pile of rubbish catches light

The back of two Hebburn flats were damaged after waste stored in a rear yard caught fire.

Sixteen firefighters from South Shields and Wallsend were called to the back of Collingwood Street in Hebburn just before 10pm yesterday.

Guttering of the properties and the back door of the upper flat were damaged by the heat.

Two officers wearing breathing apparatus put out the fire using a hose reel.
