Iconic South Shields theatre set to close for ‘essential improvement works’
The Customs House is set to close to members of the public.
The Customs House has announced that it is set to undergo a closure period to allow for “essential building improvement works”.
The popular venue, on Mill Dam, in South Shields will be shut to members of the public from Monday, July 20, until Friday, July 31.
It comes as part of ongoing investment at The Customs House, with the closure period set to allow for the building’s “long-serving” boiler system to be removed and replaced with a new, modern heating system.

The theatre has confirmed that the work is part of a wider programme of improvements ahead of major refurbishment plans next year.
A post on The Customs House’s Facebook page has confirmed that the venue will be reopened to members of the public from Saturday, August 1.
It said: “The Customs House will be closed to the public from Mon 20 Jul to Fri 31 Jul inclusive while we undertake essential building improvement works.
“As part of our ongoing investment in the venue, our long-serving boiler system will be removed and replaced with a new, modern heating system.
“This significant upgrade is an important step in ensuring The Customs House continues to provide the high-quality facilities and visitor experience our audiences deserve.
“The work also forms part of a wider programme of improvements ahead of our major refurbishment planned for the new year.
“We look forward to welcoming audiences back when The Customs House reopens on Sat 1 Aug.
“Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support while these essential works are carried out.”
