Coloccini injured himself during the club's break to La Manga for a training camp and there are fears he could miss four weeks of the club's battle for survival.
McClaren named Jonjo Shelvey captain for Saturday's 2-1 friendly win over Lillestrom in La Manga, with Coloccini rested for the game.
It is reported he injured himself in the warm-down afterwards.
