Newcastle United's survival hopes have been handed a blow - with news captain Fabricio Coloccini is facing a month out with a calf injury.

Coloccini injured himself during the club's break to La Manga for a training camp and there are fears he could miss four weeks of the club's battle for survival.

The Magpies spent a week at La Manga Club, in Spain, as they looked to recharge their batteries ahead of a tough run-in to the end of the season.

The Dutchman said: "You never know, and it is difficult to say before you play the games, but I think this trip will help us to get closer to each other – help us to get things right .

"I think it is going to be better than before.

"It went well for me personally and for the team a few days together."And finally, Rolando Aarons impressed in the club's friendly win over Lillestrom in Spain - winning praise from Steve McClaren.

Aarons stepped off the bench midway through the second half to clinch the win with an excellent header from Jamie Sterry’s cross.

And he admits it was an important goal, despite the nature of the friendly fixture.

"We were playing against opposition we’re not used to, on a very dry surface, but it was a very good workout to end a good few days of training," the winger said.

"It was one of those games we just had to win. We had to do a job and there were lots of positives to take.

"For me, I got a goal – my first this season, although it doesn’t really count."
