As lockdown continues, dual carriageways and motorways in the region, which would have seen thousands of vehicles everyday, are now considerably quieter.

Northumbria Police were called last week by a concerned passerby who spotted a swan which had landed on the central reservation of a particularly peaceful part of the A19 in Sunderland.

Worried that the swan could cause an accident or be hurt, Pc Steve Hackett of the force’s Motor Patrols Department arrived and safely collected the swan from the central reservation and transported it back to the lake nearby.

A spokesman for the force said “We would like to thank the member of the public for informing us of this so we could safely take the bird back to its habitat and reduce the danger of any accidents on the road.”
