Popular show detailing the history of Sunderland AFC is set to return to the stage

Sunderland AFC and the Sunderland Empire have announced that ‘The Sunderland Story’ is returning exclusively to the theatre next year.
The popular show, which premiered in May 2023, will return to the Sunderland Empire from Thursday, May 15 and run until Saturday, May 31, 2025.

Hide AdWriters behind the show have confirmed that the next run will be an updated version of The Sunderland Story to keep it fresh for new and returning audiences.
The Sunderland Story promises to take fans on a trip down memory lane from the founding of the club right up to the modern day.

It details Sunderland AFC’s first trophy win, the Black Cat’s legendary managers and players, as well as giving nods to the history of the city itself.
Nicky Allt, writer of The Sunderland Story, has given audiences an insight into what they can expect from the next run of the show.

“You’ll see new scenes and songs that we could not get in first showing - such is the history of such a storied city and magnificent football club.
“Sunderland in one word is ‘passion’. It truly is an honour to write something for the passionate people of Sunderland.”

Hide AdDavid Bruce, chief business officer at Sunderland AFC, has expressed his excitement at the show returning to the Sunderland Empire next year.
He commented: “We are thrilled to be supporting the return of The Sunderland Story and are excited for its comeback in 2025.
“My time at MLS meant I missed it the first time around, but through family and friends, I know just how well the show captured the essence and heart of our Club.
“Sunderland is all about family and community, and I can’t wait to enjoy with my loved ones and fellow supporters next May.”

Hide AdMarie Nixon, theatre director at the Sunderland Empire, has reflected on how well received the show was during its first run in 2023.
She added: “We are absolutely delighted the show is returning. The atmosphere in the auditorium during performances last year was electric.
“You could feel the emotion from the crowd and their love of the club. It really was something special and we can’t wait to experience it again.”
