Port of Tyne assessing ‘severe damage’ to South Shields Pier following Storm Ingrid

The Port of Tyne is monitoring damage to South Shields Pier.

As Storm Ingrid hit South Tyneside at the weekend, a photo captured by Steven Lomas, a South Shields photographer, revealed what appeared to be significant damage to South Shields Pier on Saturday, January 24.

The Port of Tyne, which is responsible for maintaining the pier, has confirmed on Monday, January 26, that their reports indicate severe damage to a section of the stone wall near the lighthouse.

The most recent damage follows the completion of significant repair work that was caused by Storm Babet in October 2023, which saw the dome of South Shields Lighthouse torn off.

Graeme Hardie, Operations Director at the Port of Tyne, has confirmed that teams are monitoring the situation and a full assessment will be carried out when it is safe to do so.

He said: “We are aware of damage caused by Storm Ingrid over the weekend to South Shields Pier, following the completion of significant work carried out from Storm Babet in 2023.

“Safety is our absolute priority. Initial reports indicate severe damage to a section of the stone wall near the lighthouse. Public access is strictly prohibited.

“Our teams are closely monitoring the situation and will carry out a full assessment as soon as it is safe to do so.

“Updates will be provided to the public over the coming days.”
