Dog grooming items were among hundreds of pounds-worth of goods taken by a prolific South Tyneside thief.

A prolific thief who pinched dog grooming items among hundreds of pounds of goods during a 10-day spree in South Tyneside has been jailed.

Liam Carty, 35, of no fixed abode, is starting 32 weeks behind bars for 15 shoplifts in South Shields against three retailers and an earlier attempted burglary.

Carty, who is previously of Devonshire Street, in South Shields, pinched shampoo, perfume, conditioner, hairspray, a comb, brush and ear wipes from Pawfect Style Dog Grooming.

He committed the offence against the outlet in Frederick Street, South Shields, on Tuesday, October 6 – and next day committed four thefts against Morrisons in Dean Road, Chichester.

Crime spree across South Shields

In those, he pinched stock including alcohol, sandwiches, deodorant and chocolate, totalling at least £122, and returned the next day to pinch £162 of stock.

While out and about, he also stole £98 of chocolate, booze, steak and detergent from Sainsbury’s in Stanhope Road.

On Friday, October 9, he stole an unknown amount of goods from the same Morrisons and £148 of milk, noodles, chocolate, juice, steaks and a shopping basket from the same Sainsbury’s

And he also stayed busy by pinching £68 of meat from Sainsbury’s in Binchester Street, Simonside.

Two days later, Carty made off with £44 of chocolate from Morrisons, again in Dean Road, and on Monday, October 12, he stole twice from Sainsbury’s in Stanhope Road, taking £90 of goods.

The next day, he returned to the same Sainsbury’s to steal groceries to an unknown value.

He rounded off his spree by taking £74 of goods from Sainsbury’s Binchester Street store on Thursday, October 15.

‘I don’t think any of the goods stolen in the thefts were recovered’

Prosecutor Glenda Beck said Carty also entered a garden shed at an address in South Shields on Saturday, June 6, but he discarded items he picked up just metres away.

She added: “I don’t think any of the goods stolen in the thefts were recovered.

“At 6.30am, the injured party noticed that their shed door had been kicked in and items removed. Items were found in an area nearby.

“He checked CCTV and was able to hear a loud ‘bang’. The defendant has 111 theft or kindred offences and was jailed in July.”

‘He is going to prison’

At South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, Carty pleaded guilty to 15 counts of shop theft and one of attempted burglary with intent to steal.

David Forrester, defending, told magistrates Carty was being recalled to prison by the Probation Service for breaching the terms of his licence.

Mr Forrester added: “It’s their standard recall of 56 days. It’s telling that he gets out of prison on October 1 and by October 7 is living on the streets.

“He has a long-standing drug addiction. He’s just told me that he can’t handle it on the outside.

“He is going to prison. I just ask that you keep it as short as possible in the circumstances.”

District Judge Zoe Passfield jailed Carty for 32 concurrent weeks for each theft, and to four concurrent weeks for the attempted burglary.

He must also pay a £187 victim surcharge.
