Crews from Marley Pots and Sunderland Central were called to a farm cottage in Sunderland Road, East Boldon, this morning where the bedroom was on fire.

They arrived at the single storey home at 2.02am to find the property owners had already escaped the blaze.

However, crews ran into the flames to rescue five dogs and a puppy that were still inside. The animals escaped unharmed.

The property was left smoke damaged and the cause of the fire was accidental.
