South Shields organisation gets police charity cash

Apna Ghar, based in South Shields, provides services to women from BME communities across South Tyneside, helping females develop confidence and be empowered to recognises their full potential while maintaining their cultural identity.

The centre offers a range of training courses, support, outreach support, coffee mornings, advice sessions, support for domestic abuse victims, information sessions and a girls youth group.

The charity applied to funding from the Northumbria Police Charities Fund to buy ten tablets.

The new technology means staff can access information quickly when attending appointments in the community and members can use them when at the centre to complete online forms or search for jobs.

The youth group will also be able to use the tables to help with homework and assignments.

Asia Rahman, Lead Development Officer, from Apna Ghar said: "We are thrilled with the tablets.

"This will enhance the work at the centre as well as provide further opportunities for our members and staff. I would like to thank Northumbria Police, PC Herbert and Ritchie Miles for their continued support."

Pc Alicia Herbert said: "We work very closely with Apna Ghar, it is a great charity that provides invaluable support to minority ethnic women and girls in the community and we're only too pleased that we could support those involved and hope they find the new tablets useful.

"Building positive relationships with organisations like this is crucial to help us increase engagement within the community and find out what it is that affects them and what we can do to help.
