Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle (STAN) hopes people will set things on course by getting involved this year.

The organisation has saved 110 tons of recyclable goods from landfill over the last three years, mostly through its Home @ Windmill Warehouse recycling centre at Middlefields Industrial Estate in Tyne Dock, South Shields.

Bosses believe they can reach their goal if residents fully support the green recycling initiative.

Rebecca Maw, community engagement manager, said: “It is an ambitious target, but it is one that I’m sure we can reach.

“Recycling is a very important and valuable part of modern life, and more people than ever are aware of the value ensuring their unwanted goods are saved for others to use.

“The availability of Groundwork’s two recycling centres means it is very easy for people in South Tyneside to save products from landfill. Donating them to us is a much better option than discarding them in other ways, and it means other people and the environment are benefitting.

“I hope people will support our programme of recycling and do all they can to help us achieve our aim.”

Value-for-money items recycled and sold at Home @ Windmill Warehouse include bicycles, prams, computers, CD players, fitness equipment, and musical instruments.

All electrical goods are UK safety standard tested before being re-sold, and microwaves are given further safety checks. All come with a 28-day guarantee.

Stock at the warehouse, which is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, is priced to be affordable to all within the community.

Groundwork also provides an internal recycling service for ‘green’ companies and can collect paper, cardboard, cans and plastic bottles at competitive rates.
