South Tyneside’s electric vehicle charging network expands with new seafront chargers
South Tyneside Council is continuing to expand access to electric vehicle charging in the borough.
New rapid chargers, which have been installed at South Shields seafront, are forming part of a wider programme with Connected Kerb and the North East Combined Authority (NECA) to grow local charging provisions.

The new installations form part of North East Mayor Kim McGuinness’ 92-charger rollout across the North East, which aims to support the region’s transition to greener transport.
The local authority has stated that the chargers at the Foreshore are currently awaiting connection to the grid, with work due to complete shortly - once live, they will offer a rapid charge of around 30 minutes.
South Tyneside has a total of 68 EV charging points across the borough, with five rapid charging points installed at South Shields Seafront and another two at Jarrow Focus using funding secured by Mayor Kim.

Cllr Tracey Dixon, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “We are committed to making it easier for people to choose cleaner and greener ways to travel.
“Through our work with Connected Kerb and the Combined Authority, we are bringing more modern, reliable charging options to communities right across South Tyneside.
“This investment is part of a wider regional programme to expand the network and ensure residents and visitors have access to the right infrastructure as demand continues to grow.”
Cllr Ernest Gibson, Lead Member for Neighbourhoods and Climate Change, at South Tyneside Council, added: “These chargers will make a real difference to people who rely on electric vehicles for day‑to‑day travel or who are visiting the Foreshore.
“Quick and convenient charging helps give people confidence that they can make the switch to cleaner transport.
“We will keep working with partners to bring more charging points online and make sure the network is reliable and easy to use.”
In addition to the new seafront chargers, the Council’s partnership with Connected Kerb is being rolled out.
The partnership is upgrading and expanding the EV charging infrastructure across the borough, with the installation of up to 2,000 new charging points over the 20-year partnership.
