Sunderland press conference round-up: 7 things we learned

Moyes has come under increasing pressure this week in the aftermath of Sunderland’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal, which left the Black Cats still without a Premier League win this season.

The Wearsiders’ boss batted away any discussions over his future, however, and focused on getting three points down on the south coast tomorrow.

Here’s seven things we learned from Moyes’ press conference.

1. Moyes is no quitter and believes fans don’t want him to be sacked

Reports earlier this week claimed Moyes would be sacked if Sunderland lose to Bournemouth, claims which were rubbished by club insiders.

And the Scot says he believes fans want stability, not sackings after a long period of upheaval at the Stadium of Light.

2. Oh no, O’Shea

It’s not good news on the defensive injury front, with experienced stopper John O’Shea ruled out of tomorrow’s game.

The 35-year-old’s hamstring injury isn’t serious but he won’t feature against Bournemouth.

3. Seb Larsson continues his comeback

The Swede has made a swift return from knee surgery and is back in training ahead of schedule.

4. Back Catt?

Influential star Lee Cattermole is also missing tomorrow, but there is more positive on that front.

The midfielder could return to training next week.

5. Sunderland won’t hide from the fans

David Moyes says Sunderland are not hiding away despite the poor start to the season. The trip to Nissan in the week proves that him and the players will face the fans and engage with the community.

He said: “We’re not hiding and we won’t. We want to work hard to engage with the supporters because we need them.”

6. Moyes is an Eddie Howe fan

The Sunderland boss had plenty of praise for his Bournemouth counterpart.

The Scot said: “Eddie Howe has done really well. They have a strong team who have come through the divisions and added to it well.”

7. ...and Howe isn’t taking anything for granted in this fixture

A final note from the Bournemouth end, with Cherries boss having faced the media this morning too.

He’s not expecting an easy game, despite Sunderland’s perilous position.

Eddie Howe said: “You’re going to get the cliches from me this morning! There are no easy games in the Premier League. Things change from week to week.”
