‘We're really proud’ - Popular South Shields run set to mark its tenth anniversary
A South Shields run is about to celebration turning 10-years-old.
Having started off as a training race for the Great North Run, the ever-popular South Shields 10-Mile Run is set to celebrate its tenth anniversary.
Organised by South Shields-based Run Eat Sleep, the much-loved coastal road race is set to take place on Sunday, August 2.
The event, which saw more than 330 runners take part in last year, begins at Souter Lighthouse, with runners following a scenic route along the coastline and The Leas.
The course gives participants the chance to take in the impressive views of Marsden Rock, Frenchman’s Bay and Sandhaven Beach.

‘More than just a race’
Luke Adams, the race organiser, has previously told the Shields Gazette how the event has developed over the course of the last decade.
He said: “The South Shields 10-Mile originally started as a training run for local runners preparing for the Great North Run.
“We simply wanted to create something supportive and well-organised along our beautiful coastline.
“Over the years it’s grown into a much-loved fixture in the local running calendar, and that’s entirely down to the incredible community around it — the runners who return year after year, the amazing volunteers who give up their time, and the ongoing support from the National Trust at Souter Lighthouse.
“It’s more than just a race now — it’s a celebration of everything that makes our local running community so special.”
‘We’re really proud’
Ahead of this year’s event, Luke has thanked those who have made it possible to host the race year after year.
He added: "We'd like to say a big thank you to the runners, running clubs, groups, volunteers and sponsors that have supported the event over the last 10 years, and we'd love to welcome along some new faces to take part in the event this year too.
“We're really proud of our friendly community event showcasing our favourite coastal running routes that everyone can enjoy."
