Young cyclist in critical condition after being hit by a car in South Shields

A 21-year-old cyclist is in a critical condition after being hit by a car on the John Reid Road in South Shields last night.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the collision involving a Ford Focus which happened at 11.19pm last night on the A1300 John Reid Road at the junction with Chesterton Road in South Shields.

Two ambulance crews from the Hazardous Area Response Team were called to the scene and the cyclist was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he is currently in a critical condition.

The driver of the car was not injured.
