Hebburn Town boss delivers 'sink or swim' challenge to his squad after encouraging start

Hebburn Town manager Daniel Moore has delivered a new challenge to his squad after Saturday’s draw at Telford United - full story in Monday’s Shields Gazette.

Hebburn Town manager Daniel Moore challenged his squad to change their mentality and believe that they belong in the National League North.

Hebburn are sitting 10th in the table following Saturday’s 2-2 draw at AFC Telford United - and with two months of the season behind them, Moore’s men can reflect on a solid start to their first-ever season in step two of the non-league system.

Campbell Darcy marked his loan return to Hebburn with a goal before Telford turned the game around to lead 2-1 with second-half strikes from Remi Walker and James Meddows. But the Hornets delivered a late sting courtesy of Jake Charles' 90th-minute strike to rescue a point at New Bucks Head over the weekend.

The Hornets boss has been impressed with what he has witnessed from his players as they rise to the challenge of competing alongside a plethora of big-name clubs throughout the season - but called for his squad to show more belief as they head into a key part of the season.

He told The Gazette: “I think there will be a mindset change at some point because every team in this league is there on merit. There are established players at every club, those that have played at a higher level and our players will have to believe they are established players at this level.

“It’s a bit of a sink or swim this year. Some will step up, some won’t - but from what we have seen so far, they are more than capable of stepping up and doing it on a consistent basis because they have been fantastic so far.

“The mentality has to be that we aren’t just happy to stay in the division now, we want to be a club that can flourish week-in, week-out. Apart from Oxford City and Radcliffe, we have been in every game and that’s against a lot of full-time teams. It’s not a bad start, we’ve hit our targets and we just need to keep believing.”

The Hornets return to the Trustmark Group Stadium next Saturday afternoon when they host Harborough Town.
