With the return of European football to St James’ Park becoming more and more likely as games go by, Newcastle United could have a very busy summer on their hands.
Both quality and depth will need to be added to Eddie Howe’s squad if they are to successfully balance the demands of domestic and European football next season.
Unsurprisingly, there have been plenty of players rumoured to be on the move to St James’ Park this summer - but which are likely to join and which players probably won’t be moving to Tyneside?
Here, we take a look at a host of players that have been linked with a move to Newcastle United this summer and assess whether they are likely to join the club or not.

9. Scott McTominay (possible)
Newcastle United are admirers of McTominay and could make a move for him this summer. The Scotland international would fit perfectly into their midfield - but a reported price tag of £50m would undoubtedly need to be lowered for the Magpies to make their move. Photo: Stu Forster

10. Mason Mount (unlikely)
Mount could leave Stamford Bridge this summer with his current deal at the club set to expire at the end of next season. Whilst a move to Newcastle has been mooted, it seems that Liverpool hold real interest in him with Anfield regarded as his most likely destination should he leave Stamford Bridge. 11. Harvey Barnes (possible)
Rumours of Newcastle’s interest in Barnes have emerged fairly recently. As an out and out winger, Barnes would fit perfectly into Howe’s current system. Relegation for Leicester City could spark a clear out at the club and Barnes could be one that is allowed to leave. Photo: Marc Atkins

12. Ruben Neves (unlikely)
Neves has been listed as a target for Newcastle this summer, although reports suggest Howe would prefer someone more mobile than the Portuguese midfielder. Liverpool’s midfield rebuild could see them move for Neves when the transfer window opens. Photo: David Rogers
