Alan Shearer names the Newcastle United decision he would 'love' to see Matthias Jaissle make v Crystal Palace

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has named one player he wouldn’t be surprised to see called-up to the starting line-up this weekend.

Alan Shearer has admitted he would ‘love’ to see Dan Burn return to the Newcastle United starting line-up at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Burn is yet to start a competitive match this season following an ankle injury picked up ahead of the Premier League opener against Liverpool. But the Newcastle captain has returned to the bench in the last two matches, coming off the bench in both.

In the latter stages of the 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa last time out at St James’ Park, Burn was deployed as a makeshift striker in an attempt to try and rescue a point for Matthias Jaissle’s side.

Alan Shearer on Dan Burn

Newcastle have kept just one clean sheet in seven Premier League matches so far this season and have lost three of their last four games. As such, Shearer believes Burn would be a welcome return to the starting line-up.

“I saw Dan in the week and he was in good spirits, despite the last couple of results," he said.

“It was great seeing him get back on the pitch, albeit in a slightly different position but I’d love to have him back and involved in the team this weekend.

“With his leadership qualities and his understanding of how much we need a win, then it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he was back in the starting XI.”

With Burn yet to start a competitive game since last season, Jaissle has admitted it will take the defender ‘at least a couple of weeks’ to get back to his best level.

Speaking in Friday’s press conference, the Newcastle head coach said: “When I’m talking to colleagues of mine in this league, they also rely on leaders on the pitch – extended arms who can deliver the match plan on the pitch.

“Of course, Dan is missing a lot. Like a couple of others as well. When we get them back and when we get them fit back – I imagine it takes still at least a couple of weeks to have them solid and on their best level – then it will get better.”
