Newcastle United official injury update as key duo ruled out - return date teased

Newcastle United were without some key players for Saturday’s 2-1 win against Manchester City at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United beat Manchester City 2-1 at St James’ Park on Saturday evening thanks to a brace from Harvey Barnes.

Barnes has scored three goals in two matches in the absence of Anthony Gordon, who remained out with a hip injury.

Gordon suffered the injury in the 2-0 win over Athletic Club in the Champions League earlier in the month. It ruled him out of the Brentford match, international duty with England and now the Manchester City match.

But it is hoped the 24-year-old will be part of the travelling group to Marseille for Tuesday night’s Champions League clash. Gordon trained with Newcastle during the international break, but a late call was made not to involve him against Man City.

During the break, right-back Kieran Trippier picked up a hamstring injury that ruled him out of Saturday’s match. As a result, Tino Livramento came straight back into the starting line-up after two months out with a knee injury.

Now with a quick turnaround in games and a big physical effort required to grind out the win against Manchester City, the fitness and availability of Newcastle’s players will be key heading into the Marseille match.

Eddie Howe provides injury update on Newcastle United duo

Speaking after the Manchester City win, Howe teased Gordon could be back available for the Marseille game which takes place in a few days time.

“Anthony's very close just not quite ready for today,” Howe said. “But he's working hard and he'll be ready, I think, in the next few days.”

But there was less clarity regarding Trippier’s injury as Howe added: “Kieran, I'm unsure. I'm waiting for feedback from the medical team.”

With Emil Krafth also out against Man City, it would be a big ask for Livramento to start to matches in the space of three days after two months out.

There will also be question marks over Lewis Hall, who impressed on his first Premier League start at St James’ Park since February before going off with cramp in the second half.

Howe said: “I've not had a detailed debrief with the medical team, but cramp is what I'm led to believe it is.”

Newcastle United team news ahead of Marseille

Hall will be assessed ahead of the trip to Marseille as Gordon pushes to return to action and doubts remain over Kieran Trippier.

Attacking duo William Osula and Yoane Wissa are expected to miss the match due to injury while one player set to return is defender Dan Burn.

Burn had been filling in at left-back in the absence of Livramento and Hall but was sent off against Brentford and suspended for the Man City game.

But he is now back in contention after serving his suspension and could return to the side at Stade Velodrome on Tuesday evening.

Newcastle have put themselves in a strong position to progress into the Champions League knockout rounds with three wins from their opening four matches in the competition this season. Burn scored last time out in the Champions League in a 2-0 win over Athletic Club. It was his second goal in the competition after also finding the net in the 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain back in 2023.
